I had several left over blocks from the log cabin quilt and decided to try
making a pillow.
I used THIS tutorial from Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts.
The process was really simple. For me, the hardest part was deciding what thread color to use for the quilting. Since the blocks have both dark and light areas, I wasn't sure whether to go dark or light with thread color.
My first choice was to use a burgundy thread in a simple X through the blocks. I didn't like how the dark thread looked in the light part of the block so I picked out the stitches and went with the cream thread. {Which I'm not really thrilled with either}
I'm wondering if I would like it better using dark thread and light thread. I'm not very confident machine quilting anything other than straight lines but I'd be willing to try on a small project like a pillow.
I think I'm going to make another pillow to try it out. I'm also going to switch the dark/light placement on the next one.

Everyone has to start somewhere...you just happen to be in the straight line quilt phase. Before you know it, you'll put that jumping foot on your machine and run! The quilting looks good--lines are straight, stitches are even, and your design is consistent throughout. There's lots to appreciate in this little pillow cover. You should be proud! Quilted pillows are a great way to practice and learn new techniques. When you're ready, check out Leah Day's website, she will get you started on other techniques and you can search by skill level!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information Mary. You're right about a pillow being the perfect way to practice.
Deletenice finish ! I really like your log cabin blocks. I live 'in the middle of nowhere' so it is sometimes difficult to get to the fabric shop to pick out matching thread. I have used invisible thread when I get impatient and I want to get on with a project. It always matches ! I found that I have to adjust my bobbin tension and then I don't have any trouble with breakage. I use Connecting Threads brand.
ReplyDeleteColleen, I'm fairly new to quilting and I had no idea there's invisible thread! That may solve the color issue. Next time I order from Connecting Threads I'm going to order some. Thanks for the tip.
